Is it better to squat in flat shoes?

I prefer really flat highly flexible soled shoes for doing all leg exercises. In that way I can feel exactly where the heels and balls of my feet are. Even if I want to change the angle at my ankles for squats, I can better feel my heels up on those weight plates.

Flexible soles also help with walking lunges, so that I can feel that my front foot is planted flat and my back foot is up on it’s ball only.

Regular running shoes have huge cushioned soles and I don’t like the forces placed on my knees as a result. Sort of like high heels, though most certainly not stress to that effect! It’s just that when the heels are artificially lifted, the weight must be borne more by the quadriceps.

You might think that’s better and so I should just wear cushioned heels for squatting, but I actually put the plates under my feet for a completely different reason. Sometimes I just want to save my ankles from having to bend at a higher angle. It just depends on ankle flexibility.
